2010 Honoree: Temple Sinai

Founded in 1954, Temple Sinai openly welcomes Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) persons as full participants and members of the congregation. Temple Sinai is supported in this by its parent organization, the Jewish Reconstructionist Federation (JRF). The Reconstructionist movement has been at the forefront of efforts to include and integrate LGBT individuals and families into all aspects of Jewish communal and religious life.

The JRF has been on record in support of full equality of rights and opportunities for gay men and lesbians since 1984 when the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College began admitting openly gay and lesbian applicants. In 2008, in response to propositions around the United States limiting the rights of LGBT persons to marry and adopt children, the JRF re-affirmed its full-support of the Jewish values that are the foundation of its unwavering commitment to work towards ending inequality and discrimination against LGBT persons. For over a decade, Temple Sinai has worked to create an open and affirming congregation hosting LGBT-themed events, the regions first Pride Shabbat (an annual tradition), and participating regularly in local and statewide advocacy on LGBT issues. Many prominent LGBT community leaders, including previous Buffalo Brunch awardees, have been proud to call Temple Sinai home.

Temple Sinai continues to have active LGBT members serving as board and committee members, youth group leaders, advisors on ritual and liturgy, and much more who enjoy the freedom to be themselves and experience Judaism in an open and loving environment that supports them, their spouses or partners, children, and friends in all aspects of Jewish worship and communal life. LGBT members know themselves to be valued and respected members and leaders of Temple Sinai and the congregation welcomes all community members who wish to experience Judaism in a safe, affirming, and open environment. Temple Sinai is honored to be recognized for its service to the LGBT community of WNY and looks forward to many more years of providing for the spiritual needs of the local LGBT community.
