2010 Honoree: Bruce Kogan

Bruce Kogan has always been an advocate for the underdog.  Born in Brooklyn, New York Bruce worked for several years, in New York City and Buffalo, for the New York State Crime Victims Board, championing the rights of the victim.  At this time he was the only openly gay Crime Victims Board investigator.  Mentored by Ermano Stingo, Bruce found a gay man who was a true role model he could emulate.  While living in New York City Bruce was an active member of Lambda Independent Democrats, Stonewall Democrats and the LGBT Police Council.

After moving to Buffalo in 1977 Bruce became active in the local Stonewall Democrats of Western New York (President 2009, Vice President for Political Outreach 2010); Gay and Lesbian Youth Services (GLYS); and OutSpoken for Equality.  Bruce’s participation includes financial contributions to many LGBT organizations.   Lobbying efforts for OutSpoken for Equality included financing production and distribution of a video, sent to every State Assemblyperson and Senator, to help pass the Dignity for All Students bill.

Unafraid to confront politicos, Bruce continues his life-long commitment to advocacy by educating those in office with personal visits to City Hall and Albany and through letter writing campaigns.
